Kennedy House School

Back to Giving Page

Along with supporting Imire, a percentage of proceeds from our Safari wallpapers and fabrics, will also go towards Kennedy House School in Tanzania. Juliet’s sister in law, Frances Charters, moved there after leaving Zimbabwe in 2001. She opened the school in 2009 with her husband Keith, with only 23 children. Kennedy House now has over 100 pupils representing over 19 different nationalities with fourteen teaching staff.

Kennedy House is not just an important school for the families that live in this part of Tanzania and can afford a quality education, it’s an important part of the local community. They work closely with village schools and childcare centres that rely on donations to keep going, not just to teach kids but for the development of infrastructure – toilets, playgrounds, classrooms – and the provision of food and equipment. Their staff – many with international experience – volunteer their time to support teachers in training.

They run a scholarship and bursary program, awards are only open to Tanzanian citizens whose circumstances might preclude them from the world class education offered at Kennedy House. One of their newest intakes is a little girl of just three, from a single parent family whose mother has lost her income on the back of Covid 19.

Frances says ‘We do all of this because we believe that attending school is a right that should be available to all children. We do it because we want to break down the barriers that can come with a lack of education and we achieve it by making sure our little school is the busily beating heart of a very diverse community.’

We are thrilled that we can now support the school a little but giving Frances and her team of staff, a percentage of proceeds from our Safari wallpaper and fabric range. This money will hopefully help sponsor a child through the school and support some exciting community projects in the coming years.
